ReUnited: United Way’s Newest Initiative Connects Retirees to Our Community in New and Meaningful Ways

This month, United Way is launching ReUnited, a vibrant initiative designed specifically for retirees (or those nearing retirement) who want to stay engaged, make a difference, and focus on their social purpose in the next chapter of their lives.  

As one of ReUnited’s first members, Dr. Sam Shaw aptly put it this way: “Edmonton is a city of people who care about one another. It’s not just a place to live, work, and play, but it’s also a place to retire.” ReUnited embodies this spirit by offering retirees a chance to maintain or rekindle that joy, laughter, and connection that can sometimes fade after leaving the workforce. It’s about coming together to share one’s experience, passion, and energy while making a lasting impact in our community. 

We talked to three of ReUnited’s volunteer cabinet members who shared five reasons why fellow retirees should get involved with United Way’s newest initiative.

1. Community Needs You and You Need It

Retirement doesn’t mean your community no longer needs you. In fact, the need for caring, dedicated individuals is always high. For those who have retired and now have more time, there are opportunities to contribute in ways that might not have been possible during their working years. Plus, this engagement doesn’t just help others — it enriches a retiree’s life, too. 

“ReUnited is going to really help and support a lot of folks out there who don’t know what to do in their retirement,” says ReUnited Cabinet Member Ray Guidinger, who’s been retired for four years.” We can help them be engaged in the community and increase their quality of life.”  

It’s important for retirees to stay connected, stay active, and continue to be a vital part of something bigger than yourself. “There are so many needs in our community,” adds Dr. Sam Shaw. “And I think retirement is about leaving this world better than how we found it.”

2. Rediscover or Refocus Your Purpose

After dedicating so much of one’s life to career or family (or both!), retirement can leave many people wondering: “What’s next?” 

United Way relationship lead Adam Piercey says ReUnited is here to help retirees answer that question by providing opportunities to engage with our community in ways that ignite their sense of social purpose. “It’s about providing that space and that community of connection to give retirees options for what’s next for you.” Whether they’re interested in volunteering, fundraising, or participating in local events, ReUnited helps members discover a sense of purpose and fulfillment while making a positive difference. 

“The freedom of being retired is choosing what you get involved with,” says Dr. Sam Shaw. “It’s about bringing that passion that you couldn’t pursue during your career to something that is truly inspiring.” 

3. Embrace New Challenges

The years of experience and knowledge acquired by an individual approaching or at the end of their career are invaluable. By staying engaged with the community through ReUnited, members have the chance to grow, learn, share their wisdom through mentorship, tackle fresh challenges, and contribute in ways that are both impactful and fulfilling. 

“There is so much this community [of retirees] has been able to accomplish in their lifetimes,” Adam says. “Finding a new outlet for them is something that I think is really important.” ReUnited helps them explore new ways to contribute and continue building their legacy. 

4. Form Meaningful Connections

One of the biggest challenges of retirement is losing the daily interactions many people once had with colleagues and friends. Louise Hayes, a dedicated ReUnited Cabinet Member points out, “Lots of people, their circle is very, very small. They go to work, come home, and that’s it. So, when they retire, they’re completely closed off. Lots of them would be delighted if they were asked to participate in ReUnited.”  

ReUnited offers a chance for retirees to build new, meaningful connections with people who share their interests and passions, fostering lifelong friendships.  

“People need connection,” adds Adam. “The most inspiring part of my job is being able to connect with our members and keep them connected to each other.” 

5. Access Exclusive Engagement Opportunities

When an individual joins ReUnited, they’ll be among the first to hear about exciting activities and events tailored to retirees and those nearing retirement. From financial literacy workshops to peer-to-peer fundraisers in support of United Way’s work in the community, there’s something for everyone. 

For instance, on November 21, 2024, ReUnited is hosting a Day of Caring where members can bring a friend aged 12 and up — whether it’s a child, grandchild, partner, or friend — and spend an afternoon volunteering to sort and package winterwear items for United Way’s Coats for Kids & Families program. It’s an excellent way to make an impact while spending quality time with others. 

“Whether it’s a financial workshop for seniors or a Day of Caring, it’s about being there for our neighbours,” says Dr. Sam Shaw.   

The Power of Connection 

“We want to get people reconnected,” says Louise, noting that many people over the years participated in United Way workplace campaigns but lost that connection when they retired.  

To those who can relate to this disconnect, ReUnited is an open invitation to return and to continue making a difference in the community through United Way outside of the workplace. With a variety of opportunities to get involved, network, and give back, retirement isn’t the end—it’s just the beginning of acting on your social purpose. 

“The difference we make in the community is going to be huge, and the difference we make with all our [ReUnited] members is going to be huge, too. So come and join us,” says Ray of the volunteer group’s goals. And, if that’s not enough to convince you, Ray adds, “We have a great group, and we’re going to have a ton of fun!”
