In times of crisis, United Way comes together with governments and our funded agency partners to meet the urgent and emerging needs of our community. We know that we can make a much bigger impact when we work united.
As a trusted leader, United Way leverages our extensive network of partners and collaborators to identify urgent needs and emerging issues that will continue to impact communities after the initial crisis has passed. Together, United Way and our partners develop new and innovative ways of addressing these needs by mobilizing community support.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, United Way of the Alberta Capital Region staff worked rapidly to rally the community together to fundraise for a COVID-19 relief fund and partnered with local agencies as they continued to provide vital services and support to members of our community who were more vulnerable to COVID-19 or impacted by limitations put in place to prevent the spread of illness.
United Way leveraged the support of caring individuals and companies to help provide thousands of masks to the most vulnerable through our InKind Exchange.
Through a grant from the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program, United Way provided laptops, wellness checks, grocery and pharmacy deliveries, transportation, and essentials such as hygiene items and meals to local seniors in need.
Hundreds of hygiene kits were distributed to front-line agencies for their program participants. United Way also provided supplies to frontline agencies operating centralized services for houseless and other vulnerable individuals at Edmonton EXPO Centre and Edmonton Convention Centre.
211 has been a lifeline for those affected by the pandemic. 211 mobilized quickly to gather information and resources in the early days of the crisis and expanded services to meet needs of all Albertans.
When classrooms closed, so did access to in-school supports such as All in for Youth. Many students were at risk of falling behind because they lacked technology to access online lessons. United Way distributed more than 1,500 computers so students could continue learning and connect with mental health and mentorship supports.
United Way supporters were able to volunteer from home by assembling kits for babies, children, and seniors that were then distributed to people in need to help weather the storm during the pandemic.
