December 2, 2024
The spirit of community came alive as ReUnited, United Way’s brand-new network for retirees and near-retirees, gathered for their first-ever activity — a volunteer Day of Caring. This group of changemakers, united by their passion for making a difference, worked together to support United Way’s Coats for Kids & Families, an initiative that provides essential winter gear to individuals and families in the Alberta Capital Region.
ReUnited is a way for United Way supporters to continue their legacy of giving back after leaving the workforce. It’s a movement that taps into the skills, knowledge, and compassion of those who have spent decades contributing to their communities.
For many families, Edmonton’s long, harsh winters present a daunting challenge. Last year alone, Coats for Kids & Families distributed more than 7,200 coats across the Alberta Capital Region. As the need in community continues to grow, the program aims to bridge this gap and ensure no one faces winter without the essentials.
With this knowledge, the ReUnited group set to work. They sorted coats, gloves, scarves, and more, carefully packaging them for distribution to local agencies. But their contributions didn’t stop there — many participants brought their own donations of gently used or new winter wear, getting us closer to reaching out goal of collecting 10,000 coats!
The room buzzed with conversation and laughter as the group worked shoulder to shoulder, driven by a shared purpose. For staff at United Way’s warehouse, watching the scene unfold was a moment of inspiration.
“Seeing this group come together for their first activity was truly heartwarming,” shares Nicholas Jakubec, United Way’s Manager of Day of Caring Operations.
“They brought not just their time and effort, but their compassion and generosity. It’s a beautiful example of the community spirit we strive to build.”
What made the evening even more special was the way ReUnited volunteers brought their life experience to the table. Having seen firsthand how community support can transform lives, they knew this was about more than just coats — it was about dignity, safety, and hope.
ReUnited is just beginning its journey, but the group’s enthusiasm and impact have already set a strong foundation for what’s to come. These volunteers understand that retirement isn’t an end — it’s a new chapter of connection, contribution, and purpose.
