United Way are committed to ensuring that no one is left behind, especially in times of crisis. With an increasing frequency of wildfires, our focus is on long-term community well-being and resilience.
Utilizing programs like 211 Alberta, we effectively address both emergent needs and work towards sustainable recovery, collaborating with local leaders and partners. Our collective efforts are directed towards ensuring our communities can thrive in the aftermath of disasters.
The Wildfire Response and Recovery Fund is an initiative by United Way of the Alberta Capital Region to support both the immediate needs and long-term resilience of communities affected by wildfires in Alberta. This includes enhancing services like 211 Alberta, a helpline and online database of Alberta’s community and social services, which acts as a critical support utility during disasters; and providing immediate resources such as gas and grocery gift cards for evacuees through our agency partners.
We established this fund to offer support—from direct assistance to evacuees to strengthening recovery and resilience mechanisms. This approach ensures that affected individuals and families receive the help they need both now and in the future.
The funds will be used to address both the immediate needs of evacuees, providing essential items like gas and grocery gift cards through agency partners, and enhancing the capacity of community services such as 211 Alberta to ensure it can operate effectively during and after disasters. This dual approach helps provide immediate relief and supports recovery initiatives within our region, aiding communities in rebuilding and recovering.
