Women United is a growing movement of more than 70,000 women around the world dedicated to creating equal opportunity for all. Locally, this network of strong female philanthropists and their allies brings people together to create lasting social change.
Though Alberta has long been considered one of the wealthiest provinces in Canada, many Albertans are slipping into poverty — especially women — as a result of the global pandemic, rising cost of living, and the surge in inflation. Nearly two-thirds of low-wage earners in the Edmonton region are women. From single parenthood, increased caregiving demands, job loss, domestic violence, and increased anxiety and mental health challenges, women are at highest risk of being pulled into poverty.
This growing issue is what drew a group of passionate United Way of the Alberta Capital Region supporters to launch Women United, an important initiative focusing on creating equity and opportunity for local women and girls.
