2011 Spirit Awards
The Spirit Awards recognize those exceptional individuals and groups who embrace the notion that ordinary people have the potential to achieve extraordinary things.
Nominees demonstrate personal commitment to the success of the committee, workplace campaign and Mission of United Way; “We bring people and resources together to build caring, vibrant communities.” Award winners will be selected on the basis of the endorsement of others and will personify qualities of leadership, commitment, role modeling, attitude, creativity and enthusiasm.

Selection Process
The Spirit Awards Selection Panel of external volunteers and staff select recipients in each category. Award nominees will be notified by January 25th, 2012. Awards will be presented at the annual United Way Awards of Distinction Banquet on February 23, 2012. Decisions of the selection panel are final.
*New* United Way Workplace Ambassador Award, Public/Private Sector
This award is presented to the workplace employee campaign volunteer, committee member, canvasser or leadership coordinator that demonstrates:
- personal commitment to campaign success.
- dedication to coordinating and/or canvassing;
- motivating fellow employees to learn about and support United Way; and
- diplomacy;
- participation in a unique capacity.
Employee Campaign Chair (ECC) of the Year, Private Sector or Public Sector
This award is presented to the Employee Campaign Chair who demonstrates:
- best practices;
- commitment;
- cooperation;
- creativity;
- diplomacy;
- innovation;
- motivation;
- overall leadership skills; and
- strategic thinking
Kathleen Huber Outstanding Speaker
This award is presented to honour the speaker who demonstrates:
- ability to capture the hearts and minds of his/her audience;
- betterment of our community through the Speakers Bureau program;
- commitment to educating; and
- conveyance of United Way’s message
George Letki Outstanding Volunteer
This award is presented to an individual who:
- is an United Way ambassador;
- is dedicated;
- demonstrates long term ongoing commitment to United Way; and
- resolves to build a stronger community.
Campaign Special Event of the Year
This award is presented to recognize an outstanding campaign special event. Attention will be given to the
employee campaign committee with special acknowledgement for the event coordinator(s). Selection of this
award will be based on:
- Education;
- excellence in creativity;
- participation;
- promotion;
- results; and
- theme.
Note: Additional consideration will be given to the event that raises awareness of United Way.
Outstanding Campaign Committee
This award is presented to the Workplace Campaign Committee that:
- Followed Best Practices to promoting United Way Campaign (e.g. Promote Education & Awareness of United Way, engage United Way representatives, tracks and reports results,etc.)
- Showed creativity and enthusiasm in the promotion/execution of the workplace campaign
- Showed outstanding teamwork and commitment
- Achieved stronger than expected results in this year’s campaign
- Engaged United Way in strategy development and execution
Education and Engagement
This award is presented to the Workplace Campaign that:
- Increased awareness of community needs and the impact of United Way donations (e.g. Hosted presentations & special events, took part in Days of Caring, incorporated a strong education approach in the campaign, attended volunteer training sessions, etc.)
- Showed creativity and enthusiasm in the promotion/execution of the workplace campaign
- Showed excellence in coordinating and motivating volunteers.
- Engaged United Way in strategy development and execution
Nomination Form – Rising Star Award
This category recognizes and rewards the efforts of organizations that ran a United Way campaign for the first, second or third time this year.
This award is presented to the Workplace Campaign that:
- Organized their first, second or third United Way Campaign this year
- Follows Best Practices to organizing a United Way Campaign (e.g. Promote Education & Awareness of United Way, build a committee, engage United Way representatives, etc.)
- Showed creativity and enthusiasm in the promotion of the workplace campaign
- Achieved Strong Campaign Results
- Engages United Way in strategy development and execution
Quantum Leap Award
This award is presented to the Workplace Campaign Committee that:
- Achieved Stronger than expected results and engagement compared to previous years. (Provide stats and fi
- Follows Best Practices to promoting United Way Campaign (e.g. Promote Education & Awareness of United Way, build a committee, engage United Way representatives, etc.)
- Showed creativity and enthusiasm in the promotion and execution of the workplace campaign
- Showed outstanding teamwork and commitment
- Engaged United Way in strategy development and execution
Best Leaders of the Way Campaign
This award is presented to the Campaign committee who:
- Included Leadership ($1000+) giving into their workplace campaign (Creates opportunity for education through leadership presentations, events or other communication)
- Showed creativity and enthusiasm in the execution of Leadership giving
- Developed specific and comprehensive strategies towards canvassing at the leadership level (Conducts comprehensive personal canvass of all current & potential Leadership donors)
- Engages United Way in strategy development and execution
- Saw improved results in number of leaders and total leadership dollars over previous year.
