“I have been able to experience first hand how United Way works in the Alberta Capital Region. One of the benefits is meeting so many great people and being able to make friendships that will continue after our term at United Way is over. I am able to return to my employer refreshed and with many personal stories and experiences to share, along with added skills to hopefully use in my own job. I want to thank both CN and United Way for giving me this opportunity, it truly has changed my life!”

"Mahatma Gandhi said "Whatever you do will be insignificant, but it is very important that you do it." Everyday we are given the choice to take part in our communities and be active players in our own lives. Working with United Way Alberta Capital Region has shown me that no one is ever truly alone in their community; it is by working with one another that we can truly change from within to make a better society for all. United Way Alberta Capital Region is an excellent example of people working together for a greater good. This experience has truly influenced my life and I am thankful to the Government of Alberta for their financial support and all those I have met along the way."

"Being from a small town, I grew up in a tight-knit community where everyone is quick to lend a helping hand to whoever needs it. Now living in Edmonton, I have found that same sense of community through the work of the United Way. The SCR experience provides networking and personal growth opportunities, but more importantly, has opened my eyes to the extent of the need that is right here in our area, and how essential the services and programs supported by the United Way are to supporting a strong, vibrant community. I’d like to thank my employer, Imperial Oil, for providing me with this amazing opportunity."

“My experience with United Way has been amazing and I feel very honoured to be part of this wonderful program. This is my second year as a [Sponsored Campaign Rep] and every year I find out how much fun fundraising can be and how work place campaigns can really bring employees together, working toward a common goal, and making a Big Difference in this community we call home.”

“I am very proud to be a part of a company that values initiatives such as the United Way [Sponsored Campaign] Representative Program; giving back to ones community is a strong part of Enbridge Pipeline Inc’s. corporate culture and I want to sincerely thank Enbridge and community minded leaders like Sr. Vice President Leon Zupan, for giving me this tremendous opportunity. Through working with the United Way, my outlook on life has changed as well as my definition of community. There is a level of community unbeknownst to all of us; something far more powerful than infrastructure, or professional associations. Community is the individual friendships that I have developed, and the passionate people who have unexpectedly touched me through this journey. Community is a phenomenon, a feeling of connectedness that unexplainably just happens. In the words of Walt Emerson “What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.”

Like most of those before me, I have decided to summon the words of the admirable men and women who have impacted our world profoundly. However, when reflecting on those admirable individuals and their sentiments regarding positive change, I came to a self-realization - not only was my time as a [Sponsored Campaign] Representative rewarding in that I was able to contribute to my community, but rather, the most precious thing I took from my experience was an internal transformation. The following Robert Pirsig quote aptly sums up this internal transformation I underwent: "The place to improve the world is first in one's own heart and head and hands, and then work outward from there." Something within myself has clicked and I have been profoundly changed as a result of my experience at United Way. I view the Alberta Capital Region in a different light and am grateful to be a member of such an altruistic community. I recognize the grand importance of giving back to a community that has done so much for myself and others. Furthermore, I am now conscious of and admire the Capital Region's capacity for benevolence. Without this experience, I truly believe I would have continued my daily habit of ignoring the problems and obstacles that some face in our community. That will no longer be the case for myself and I owe it all to United Way.

Working for the United Way is an awesome experience which I would recommend to anyone. It is an opportunity to work for an organization for which I have a true passion that is highly dynamic in its approach to team building and in increasing awareness and raising money for the less fortunate in our community who need a handup. It is a fantastic opportunity to work with great people within the United Way. You also have an opportunity to meet and work with some wonderful individuals on their respective campaign who truly care about our community. To sum it up, it is a win-win-win. A win for the community, a win for the organization and a win for the individual who is fortunate enough to be a [Sponsored Campaign] Representative. It is the most gratifying work experience that I have every had in my life and I will always remember it fondly.

As a fourth year [Sponsored Campaign] Representative, I continue to be amazed at the commitment and dedication of campaign volunteers in the workplace. It is heart warming to know that our community wants our citizens to enjoy a safe, healthy life and that they will work diligently to make that happen. As I visited different agencies I could see the positive impact the United Way has on individuals and families and how grateful they are for the support. Thank you to the Provincial Government who have given me the opportunity to learn more about the needs of our community and how those needs are being met.
