Going through a major life change is always easier when you know someone who’s going through the same thing. That’s why I was ecstatic (and totally floored) when I learned that my boss was pregnant too, and due 10 days before me!
For the past few days (no, make that weeks) our team at United Way has been caught up in a flurry of activity. From the launch of our new website to planning our Annual Kick-off event, this hard-working group of people has not slowed down. As of 4:00 p.m. yesterday afternoon, I heard the list of ‘things to do’ being checked and double checked. Shouts could be heard across the communication team members’ desks, “Are the batteries in the camera charged?” “Did you get those extra t-shirts I left for you?” “What is this? Am I supposed to bring this with me?” And then, the inevitable packing of the event roller bag, ready to roll into Edmonton EXPO Centre. And finally, the words, “Okay, we’re good to go – quarter after four and we’re ready!” Gulp. We’re ready.
Oh, to be a fly on the wall! In the summer of 2009, a meeting of some of the world’s wealthiest individuals was called together by Warren Buffett and Bill Gates. The purpose of the invitation? To discuss the idea of giving and to talk about how this group of highly wealthy and influential individuals might be able to take philanthropic giving to a new level. What grew out of the meetings was the creation of a website where some of the wealthiest individuals in the world are making pledges to donate the majority of their wealth to charity.
The second week of September is always an exciting time at United Way. It’s the week that we officially kick off our campaign, the start of workplace BBQ’s, Loaned Representatives are up and running and last but not least, our Engineering Challenge Day of Caring occurs.
